We took to the streets of Vancouver to ask our fellow Canadians why they use the word I’m sorry often. The answers were all different; some Canadians believe they say sorry as a filler word while other Canadians say sorry because they were actually wrong in some cases. Here are some answers we got that may surprise you while some may be retable.
Sorry I am Too Friendly
Have you ever met that one person who wants to be friends with everyone so bad they overcompensate by apologizing all the time and being super nice? Yep, that’s why some Canadians find themselves saying sorry often. It’s not that they’re trying to be a people pleaser, but they just don’t want to step on any toes or worse or be anyone’s enemy. Hence, the constant “Sorey.” Canadians saying sorry is the art of balancing being overly friendly and staying away from conflict.
It’s In Their Nature
If you’re American, you may find it hard to believe but some cultures are structured around politeness. It’s no coincidence that Canada has a reputation for being one of the friendliest countries in the world. It’s been engraved in Canadians from childhood to be aware of others around them and their surroundings. They are raised to be polite and soft-spoken, it’s simply in their nature. For Canadians, saying sorry isn’t just an apology but a part of who they are.
Sorry I am Socially Awkward
Moving away from some of the more obvious reasons why Canadians say sorry. According to a poll we did on our Instagram page, the major reason for the infamous apology is that Canadians say sorry because “they’re socially awkward.” 46% of users agreed that it’s due to them being socially awkward, while the other 41% say it’s their nature and the last 12% of users think it’s because they’re too friendly.
What is your reason for being apologetic?
