What Does It Really Mean to Be a Vancouverite?

Living in Vancouver comes with its own set of quirks, habits, and traditions that make us uniquely us. Whether it’s our complicated love for nature, an undying affection for brunch, or a closet full of cozy Lululemon fits, being a Vancouverite is an identity built on equal parts pride and a little bit of playful irony. Let’s break down the telltale signs that you’ve truly embraced Vancouver life.

Love for Nature

Vancouver is famous for its stunning nature—calm lakes, fresh air, and incredible views. And yes, we do love it, but sometimes, we love it more from the comfort of our couch. Sure, we enjoy a hike now and then, and we’d never hurt a bug or stand for animal cruelty, but let’s be real: scrolling through nature photos on Instagram can be just as satisfying. As a Vancouverite, it’s common to pretend to love nature more than you actually do.

Brunch

If you live in Vancouver, you’ve definitely been to brunch more times than you can count. Office brunch, friend brunch, date brunch—there’s a brunch for every occasion. Spending your Saturday morning sipping overpriced coffee and enjoying avocado toast? Very Vancouver.

Anti-Social

You would not be a true Vancouverite without being socially awkward when someone randomly greets you in the streets. The hoodie is always up to avoid any human interaction and though we may not always expand our social circles, we stick to our small group of friends like glue. Not the best stereotype and not everyone fits it, but a true Vancouverite has a baseline clique that they stick to and are almost never looking to expand. If you have lived here for long enough, you might have picked that up too. It’s not rude; it’s just how we roll!

Lululemon

This might seem like a funny stereotype, but it’s spot on—Vancouverites are all about staying warm, cozy, and comfy. We practically live in sweats, and let’s not forget the iconic Lululemon bag that everyone and their mom have. We also love brands that care about the planet. If it’s sustainable, it’s a win in our books. So, if you call Vancouver home, chances are you’ve got at least one piece from Lululemon or another eco-conscious clothing brand in your closet.
