Whether you’re visiting Vancouver for the first time or you’re a local resident, knowing the city’s slang can make you feel like a true Vancouverite. Here are five popular Vancouver slang words and what they mean.
1. Vancouverite
If you’re from Vancouver, you’re a “Vancouverite.” This term is simply a way of identifying someone from the city. A typical Vancouverite is someone who likely shops at Aritzia, Arc’teryx, or Lululemon, has a passion for ending animal cruelty, and loves dining at Cactus Club.
2. Hundy
“Hundy,” or sometimes pronounced as “Hundeez,” refers to a hundred dollars. Although it’s used more in Surrey, you’ll hear it in Vancouver, too. It’s common when talking about money, like “I just dropped 5 hundeez on that jacket!” You can also use it to agree with someone, as in, “Are you coming to the party tonight? Hundeez!”
3. Surrey Jack
A “Surrey Jack” is similar to Toronto’s “mandem” or the UK’s “roadman.” This slang describes a young, confident, often intoxicated man who is usually with a group of other guys. If you’re in Surrey, chances are you’ve seen one. If you’re new to the area, you’re likely to meet one before long.
4. The Couve
Locals use “the Couve” as a nickname for Vancouver. It’s just a short, catchy way to refer to the city. While “The Couve” sounds laid-back and catchy, locals use it as a quick and cool way to talk about their hometown. However, it’s not a term you’ll hear from everyone—some Vancouverites might even cringe at it! So, whether you love or hate it, “The Couve” has found its way into the city’s slang, making it a fun, yet slightly divisive, nickname.
5. Canuck
“Canuck” is a slang word for a Canadian, especially a French Canadian. However, it’s also the name of Vancouver’s beloved hockey team, the Vancouver Canucks. So, whether you’re talking about a local or hockey, you’ll hear this word often. Historically, the term had been used with varying connotations, but today, it’s embraced as a friendly nickname for Canadians in general.
