We took over the streets of Vancouver to get real and raw opinions on work ethic differences between two generations—Baby Boomers and Gen Z. These conversations about generational differences in work ethic revealed some fascinating insights into how these generations view hard work, success, and the pursuit of happiness in today’s world. Understanding generational differences in work ethic is crucial to bridging the gap between them.
Fun Fact. Boomers were so hardworking that the term “workaholic” was invented for them!
But here’s the thing: Boomers see the younger generation’s approach to work and can’t help but raise an eyebrow. To them, Gen Z’s “work smarter, not harder” attitude feels like an excuse to slack off. And let’s be real, participation awards were not a thing in their time!
Gen Z: The Work-Smart Revolutionaries
To be fair, Gen Z witnessed a traumatic event in human history during the COVID 19 pandemic. It completely reset our minds to think more introspectively about what really matters in our lives. As a fellow Gen-Z myself, I believe this generation strives to work smart, but not so hard.
Generational differences in work ethic often show that we believe success comes through innovation, impact, and sustainability. We dream big, but we’re not willing to sacrifice our well-being in the process. And let’s not even start with how obsessed we are with self-care Sundays.
Unlike Boomers, we’re not interested in burning out just to prove a point. Instead, we strive to be efficient, impactful, and, yes, a little bit rebellious. We prioritize mental health, work-life balance, and meaningful connections.
But let’s not pretend we don’t have our contradictions. Social media and sophisticated algorithms influenced how we perceive success and how it can be obtained. Dreams of virality, overnight sensations, influencer culture, podcasting, and other forms of entrepreneurial ventures disenchanted the value of hard work.
Gen-Z folks love the idea of creating businesses that support good causes, but we don’t want to work too hard. We want freedom, but refuse to work for someone else’s dreams to our deathbed. Somewhere in the depths of quarantines, we forgot human collaboration is the key to success. Generational differences in work ethic continue to shape how these philosophies evolve.
The Common Ground: Learning From Each Other
Despite their differences, both generations bring something valuable to the table. Boomers remind us that there’s beauty in persistence and dedication, while Gen Z offers a fresh perspective on balancing work with life’s joys. Somewhere in between, there’s a sweet spot where we can all learn to hustle with heart, live with purpose, and build a future that respects both the grind and the need for rest.
So, whether you’re a Boomer who thinks Gen Z should toughen up or a Gen Z who thinks Boomers need to chill out, here’s a thought: maybe we can all learn a little from each other and appreciate the generational differences in work ethic.
What do you think? Share your thoughts below—whether you’re hustling hard, working smart, or maybe just somewhere in between. Let us know how you perceive generational differences in work ethic.
