How Vancouver’s High Costs Impact Long-Time Residents
Vancouver, BC, is famous for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, but the city’s escalating Affordability Crisis is a growing concern for many locals. Recently, we spoke with a lifelong resident to gain insight into what it’s like to live in Vancouver today.
The High Cost of Living in Vancouver
Impact on Family Planning
Currently residing in Coquitlam after being born and raised in the city of Vancouver, our interviewee provided a unique perspective on the suburban life that many Vancouverites are turning to as a more affordable alternative. However, even this move to the suburbs doesn’t fully alleviate the financial pressures that come with living in or near Vancouver.
When asked about starting a family, the response was telling: “All of my friends that have had kids have moved away and left.” The high cost of living in Vancouver has driven many locals to relocate, often to more affordable areas like Vancouver Island, Alberta, or even further afield to Montreal. They can’t afford it. Seriously? “None of them,” our interviewee emphasized, painting a stark picture of the challenges facing young families.
Born and Raised, But Pricing Out Residents
Walking away from the city has been the solution for many families. “So… Vancouver is outpricing its own born and raised people?” we asked. The answer was a resounding “Yeah, exactly. ” This sentiment is echoed by many Vancouverites who find themselves priced out of the very city they call home. The need to move away from Vancouver to find affordable living conditions is a growing trend, affecting long-term residents and new arrivals alike.
Vancouver Island: A More Affordable Alternative?
Despite the challenges, many see Vancouver Island as a somewhat more affordable option, though it too has seen rising costs. “Where would you move to, do you think?” we asked. “The island, probably,” our interviewee replied. Even with its own increasing prices, the island remains a more viable option for those seeking a semblance of affordability.
A Slightly Better Alternative
“[Vancouver Island] is still slightly better than here,” they admitted. The struggle for affordable housing is pervasive across British Columbia, but some areas still offer a glimmer of hope compared to Metro Vancouver’s steep costs.
Relocating Amidst Economic Hardship
Growing concerns around the Vancouver affordability crisis is forcing many lifelong residents to consider moving away, despite their deep roots in the city. This rapidly growing trend highlights the urgency for solutions to make Vancouver a more affordable place to live for everyone.
